SBDC Educational Opportunities

The UMD Center for Economic Development provides training to help start, manage, or grow an organization. Other than the Starting a Business webinar on September 27, all of the following workshops are held in the CED classroom.

MN Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) Foundations Series

This series was developed for the small business vendor that is already established and in business but new to the government marketplace. Participants complete the 6 workshops in the series at no cost:

  • September 17 - Basics of Government Contracting | Getting Started in the Government Market
  • October 2 - How to Research and Target Your Market | Government Marketing - Preparing Appropriate Materials
  • October 15 - Understanding Solicitations | Writing Proposals

Boots to Business Reboot Program: September 26, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Boots to Business Reboot is a free two step training program that provides participants an overview of business ownership as a career vocation, an outline and knowledge on the components of a business plan, a practical exercise in opportunity recognition, and an introduction to available public and private sector resources.

Step one is the Introduction to Entrepreneurship course eligible to Veterans of all areas, Servicemembers (including members of the National Guard and Reserves) and their spouses. This course, delivered at the CED on September 26 8:00-4:30, is instructed by SBA and its partners who are skilled business advisors.

Step two is an eight-week online Foundations of Entrepreneurship course instructed by a consortium of professors and practitioners led by the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University.

Basic Sale and Use Tax Workshop: October 1, 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

This course is an introduction to sales and use taxes in Minnesota. It is designed for business owners, bookkeepers, purchasing agents, and accountants who need a working knowledge of the law and how to meet their obligations. Register at

Sales & Use Tax for Manufacturers Workshop: November 6, 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

This course is for businesses located in Minnesota that make products intended to be sold ultimately at retail. It is designed for business owners, bookkeepers, purchasing agents, and accountants who need a working knowledge of how sales and use taxes in Minnesota relate to product makers and the manufacturing process. The primary focus is to give participants a better understanding of what items a manufacturer may buy exempt from sales tax and what items are taxable.
